Thrive rather than survive the school holidays

The holidays are almost upon us, so it’s time to start thinking about how to make the most of the holiday period for you and your family.

Here are some pro tips from Benestar’s parenting expert Dr Rosina McAlpine to help you thrive during the school holidays.

Planning is key

Print out a calendar for December and January and start planning. First, note down your holidays and childcare options when you’re back at work. Then get the kids involved in the planning process – researching free things to do at home and in the local area as well as some paid activities. Remind them to find activities within your budget and spread the best things out over the holiday period so they can look forward to activities throughout the holidays!

Prepare early for the return to school

The school holidays can zoom by, and then it’s back to school time. Don’t leave everything to the last minute, as that can be too stressful and not a great way to start the year.  Get the kids involved in helping to find school uniforms, bags, and sorting out stationery they will need for the start of the new school year. Only then put together your shopping list, buying only the things you need – and get to have a mini clean out at the same time. Now that’s what we call a Win-Win.

Practice self-care

The holiday period can be quite stressful if you’re trying to juggle work and family, so remember to schedule relaxing days for everyone and make time for yourself. Organise one or more sleepovers for the kids so you can have a whole day and night to yourself to relax and rejuvenate! Self-care is so important for mental and physical wellbeing, and that way, you’ll be at your best for yourself, your family and your workplace.

Support for working parents

Between keeping the kids entertained, staying on top of work and the back-to-school rush in January, this period may feel too much for working parents. An alternative to reduce stress and support work and family success is family-friendly workplaces hosting parenting-tailored programs.
